What a French drain does

It moves the water away.

Out of the spot where it pools, to a place where it can drain. Tell us where the water sits and we will say if one fits.

What is a French drain?

A French drain is a trench that holds filter fabric, gravel and a perforated plastic pipe, and it moves water away from the spot where it pools. It is one of two kinds of yard drainage we offer in Annapolis and across Anne Arundel County. River rock drainage is the other. Estimates are free.

How a French drain works.

  1. Drawing of a trench cut through a lawn, lined with fabric and filled with gravel around a pipe with holes in it

    A trench, three parts.

Filter fabric, gravel and a perforated plastic pipe.

  2. Drawing of the same trench in the rain, with arrows showing water going down through the gravel into the pipe

    It collects the water.

Water moves out of the spot where it pools.

  3. Drawing of the trench from the side: the pipe runs under the lawn and lets the water out lower down, at the foot of a slope

    The pipe carries it off.

To a ditch, a stream or a slope where it can drain.

If the water needs something else.

Questions

Do I need a French drain or river rock drainage?

It depends on the yard, and you do not have to pick before you contact us. We offer both, and we work out which one fits your yard when we quote the job.

Will a French drain keep water out of my basement?

It may not. A simple French drain moves standing water away from the foundation, yet may not stop water seeping into a basement or crawlspace. A French drain is suggested for yard flooding that is infrequent, shallow and short, and is not recommended for a yard that floods often because the ground has too little slope.

Do you take on water that collects near the house?

Yes. We quote drainage for water by the house, in the yard, beside the driveway, or in more than one of those spots. If you are not sure where it is coming from, say so. Tell us when you see the water and how long it stays: a line like "the side yard is still soft three days after rain" is the kind of detail to send, by call or text to (443) 223-8643. We also clean gutters, so say if rain is spilling over the roof edge above the wet spot, and we can price both jobs.

Where does the water from a French drain go?

It is carried away from the pooling spot and the foundation to a natural place for it to drain, such as a stream, a ditch or a slope. How well a French drain works depends on that place. A French drain should not send water where it floods or pools on a neighbor's property.
