When to clean gutters

Spring and early fall.

A clogged gutter can overflow and pour water along the foundation.

How many times a year do gutters need cleaning?

Gutters should be cleaned about twice a year, in spring and again in early fall, and any time they clog. With the debris cleared out, rain can flow down the downspout and away from the house. A clogged gutter can overflow and pour water in front of a basement window or along the foundation.

What to check.

  • Clear the debris

Rain needs a clear path to the downspout.

  • Check the downspouts

They should point and drain away from the house.

  • Trees around the house?

Consider gutter guards to keep leaves from clogging the gutters.

  • Guards need checks too

Guards can help keep debris out, but may still need attention.

Questions

When should gutters be cleaned in the fall?

Early fall. Clean them out again whenever they clog, so if leaves block the gutters later in the season, clear them once more.

Do gutters need to be cleaned every year?

Yes, about twice a year, and more often where severe storms are common. Regular upkeep also helps keep gutters from corroding and pulling loose.

What happens if you don't clean your gutters before winter?

Leaves and debris can make water back up. In fall the water can overflow and cause basement water problems. In winter, frozen water from thawing snow can form ice dams, and those can cause moisture damage to the roof and the ceiling inside.

Should I clean my own gutters or hire someone?

Either can work. If you do it yourself, set a sturdy ladder on level ground. Never crawl onto the roof, and never work when storms or ice are possible. If you would rather stay on the ground, we clean gutters, and the estimate is free.

Is gutter cleaning necessary?

Yes, and not only because of overflow. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and as little as one teaspoon is enough. Cleaning gutters and making sure they drain well helps reduce mosquitoes in a yard.
