Riva Road

is the spine of the community, and the county designates it a Scenic and Historic Road from the South River into South County.

  • 870 of 1,687 residential parcels in Riva are two-story houses in state property records, and 123 more are three-story townhouse units.

Can I get Christmas lights hung on a house in Riva?

Yes. Riva is inside our area, on the South River southwest of Annapolis. The $650 start is for a one-story house lit along its front roofline, and a taller house, more rooflines, bushes or trees get their price in a free estimate. Leasing the lights means one payment covers designing, timing, fixing, removing and storing them.

Asked in Riva

Can you light a business near the South River bridge?

Yes. Send the address and say what the building is, and we quote it by itself. The county plan finds two centres of commercial, civic and marina activity in Riva: the largest at the east side of the South River bridge, and another west of Sweet Gum Road with the post office and fire station.

I rent my house in Riva. Can I still have lights put up?

Ask the owner first, since the lights go on the roofline. Renting is the exception here: about 97 percent of Riva's occupied homes are lived in by their owners. The lights are leased either way, so neither of you buys or stores anything.

Where are the lights kept between Christmases?

With us. The lights are leased, not sold, so after the takedown that starts once New Year's has passed we keep them in storage all year. Storage is part of the one payment, like the timer and any fix during the season.

Where can we see Christmas lights near Riva?

Not in a county park in Riva itself: there are no county parks inside Riva, and the county plan calls links to parks in Davidsonville and Greater Annapolis very important. The December sights we know of close by are the volunteer fire department's Santa ride through the neighborhoods it serves and the parade of lit boats off Annapolis. We have no hand in either.
