Mowing height by grass, from University of Maryland Extension

3 to 4 in

for tall fescue and fine fescue. Most Maryland lawns are either tall fescue or zoysia.

  • 50 to 80% fewer weeds and diseases in a tall fescue lawn mowed at the right height.
  • 10 hours of mowing is about how long a blade stays sharp.

What height should tall fescue be mowed at?

3 to 4 inches, taking no more than a third of the blade in one cut. University of Maryland Extension puts Kentucky bluegrass at 2½ to 3½ inches and zoysia at 1½ to 2½, and says the right height can cut weeds and disease in tall fescue by 50 to 80 percent. We mow lawns across Anne Arundel County.

What a low or dull cut does.

  • Short mowing invites crabgrass

Thin turf with bare spots and a lawn mowed too short both favor it.

  • Low cuts weaken roots

The plants grow weaker and handle drought worse.

  • Dull blades fray the tips

Torn tips dry out and turn light brown, and a frayed cut lets disease in.

  • Lumpy ground scalps

On uneven lawns a low setting cuts the mounds nearly bare.

  • Too tall between cuts shocks the plant

Taking off more than a third at once dries the tips and sets growth back.

Questions about mowing height

How short should the grass be cut before winter?

It depends on the grass. Tall fescue gets a final cut about half an inch shorter than usual, which lets air move through it. Zoysia goes the other way: University of Maryland Extension says its last mowing before dormancy can be about a half inch higher, for a little more winter cold protection.

How often do mower blades need sharpening?

At least twice a year, in early spring and late summer, University of Maryland Extension says. A rusty or bent blade is replaced instead. A clean cut does the least harm to the leaf.

Why does my lawn look pale brown right after I mow?

Usually a dull blade. It tears and frays the leaf tips, and the torn tissue dries and turns light brown. Scalping gives a different look: patches cut nearly to the soil on the high spots of a lumpy lawn.

Should I bag the grass clippings?

Not when the lawn is mowed often enough. Penn State Extension says clippings do not need to be removed if the frequency of mowing is adequate, and Virginia Cooperative Extension says the idea that clippings form a major part of thatch has been refuted. Returned to the lawn, the fragments recycle nutrients as they decompose, University of Maryland Extension notes.

How high should zoysia be mowed in Maryland?

1½ to 2½ inches through its growing season. Zoysia is dormant in Maryland from about mid-October to mid-May, and in spring it is mowed low, about 1 inch, once, to remove the brown overwintered leaves before new growth appears.

What is the one-third rule for mowing?

Mow often enough that a single cut takes only a third of the leaf height. Virginia Cooperative Extension says that will probably be every five to six days in the active growing season and every 10 days or less when growth slows, and that the grass should be dry when it is cut.
