# Thin or Patchy Lawn? How to Thicken Grass in Maryland

> Tall fescue grows in clumps, so a Maryland lawn cannot close its own gaps. Fix what opened them, then overseed in fall. A very thin lawn can take 2 or 3 falls.

# Why your lawn is thin, and how to thicken it.

Tall fescue grows in clumps and never spreads to close a gap. Find what opened the gap, then seed it shut in fall.

## Five things that open a gap.

- **A path people walk** Packed soil along a shortcut favors weeds over grass. Mulch it or pave it.
- **A tree that has grown** Lawns under a maturing canopy thin out a little more every year.
- **Dog spots** Urea and salts kill a straw-brown patch with a dark green rim. Water the spot at once.
- **Mower ruts** The same path every cut packs two lines. Stagger the route.
- **A new house** Topsoil scraped off in construction and a poor-quality contractor seed mix fail together.

### How do you thicken a thin lawn?

Fix what thinned it, then overseed with tall fescue in fall, between mid-August and mid-October. Tall fescue is a clumping grass, so the gaps stay open until seed fills them, and University of Maryland Extension says a very thin lawn can take 2 to 3 overseedings in a row. We aerate and overseed lawns around Annapolis.

## Why a Maryland lawn stays patchy

2 to 3

fall overseedings in a row may be what a very thin lawn needs to fill in, says University of Maryland Extension.

- **7 to 14 days** for tall fescue seed to come up.

## Questions about thin lawns

### Why does my lawn get thinner every summer?

Because Maryland sits in the transition zone, where neither cool-season nor warm-season grass is happy all year. Tall fescue grows in spring and fall and goes dormant in summer heat, and individual plants die out over time. University of Maryland Extension says a uniformly green, weed-free lawn year-round is not an attainable goal here.

### Can I just throw grass seed on a thin lawn?

It works better with some preparation. University of Maryland Extension says to mow low first, around 2 to 2½ inches, rake off bulky clippings and loosen the surface, so the seed touches soil and sunlight reaches it.

### When is a lawn too far gone to overseed?

When more than about half of it is weeds. At that point University of Maryland Extension calls for a renovation: the old lawn and weeds removed, the soil improved and a new lawn started in the mid-August to mid-October window.

### Should I aerate before overseeding a thin lawn?

It helps, most of all on packed ground. University of Maryland Extension says mechanical aeration eases compaction by opening channels for air and water, and that an added benefit is exposed soil for better grass seed germination.

### Will overseeding fix bare patches from my dog?

Only until the next visit. Dog urine damage is hard to remedy, and University of Maryland Extension notes that no groundcover tolerates it better than turf. Water the spot right away to dilute it, reseed the dead patch, and expect to repeat the repair.
