# Mulch leaves or rake them?

Mow over them, even a layer a few inches deep. If grass shows after you mow, leave the bits. Rake off what still hides it.

## Mulch them, or rake them.

| What you get | Mulch them in | Rake them off |
| --- | --- | --- |
| When | Grass shows after mowing | A mat still hides it |
| How deep | Up to about 6 inches | A thick mat |
| What it gives back | Food for the soil | Mulch for beds, or compost |

### Is it better to mulch leaves or rake them?

Mow over the leaves on the mower's highest setting, twice if needed; a layer up to about 6 inches deep can be chopped in. If grass shows afterward, leave the bits to feed the soil. Where a mat still hides it, rake off the extra. In Maryland, clear heavy leaf cover late October to mid-November.

## Questions

### Do leaves kill grass if you leave them?

A thick layer can. It blocks sunlight, so the grass grows less, and it holds moisture in the turf, which raises the chance of disease. Chopped leaves do no harm: a Purdue test mulched 4,000 pounds of maple leaves an acre into a lawn with no ill effect.

### Does mulching leaves help with weeds?

Over time, yes. The chopped leaves cover bare spots where weed seeds would sprout, and Michigan State found that three years of it can nearly clear out dandelions and crabgrass.

### Should you mulch leaves wet or dry?

Dry or slightly damp, never wet. Damp leaves raise less dust, but wet ones strain the mower and do not chop into small pieces that break down in the soil.

### Can a mower mulch pine needles?

Not well. Pine needles resist breaking down and stay whole for months, even when chopped. Rake them up and use them as mulch around shrubs instead.

### What can I do with raked leaves?

Move them onto planting beds, which helps wildlife most, or start a compost pile. Whole leaves compost better than shredded ones, which pack down and keep air out. Spare bags can go to a neighbor for their beds.

### Should leaves stay in the beds until spring?

Some can. Fallen leaves give pollinators a place to spend the winter, and old leaves break down and add nutrients to the soil, so there is no hurry with the spring cleanup.
